| HAZEL IRVINE ON THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP It's a new-look West Course at Wentworth that is hosting the PGA Championship this weekend. While the changes to the course may not have been universally welcomed, it is great that they have brought the likes of Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter back to the event after a couple of years away. Poulter had a pretty forgettable opening round on Thursday, but Harrington was going nicely before an eight at the 17th, yet the Irishman was still well in the hunt after the first day. Early indications suggest there is definitely a new feel to the course and it certainly seems to be a different type of examination for the players. Ernie Els had a lot of input into the new layout and he'll perhaps be feeling pretty nervous this weekend as to how the changes are received. Considering all the coverage given to the revamped 18th, it's ironic that the only blemish on his first-round card came at that hole. Rory McIlroy struggled in his opening holes but as his win on the US Tour earlier this month highlighted, this is an exciting time for UK golf. There are four players in the world's top 10 and what's more, they have got genuine ambitions of reaching the very top. There could be a real sea change as Tiger Woods is injured and not in the best form, setting up the very real prospect of him losing his world number one status for the first time in almost five years. American Phil Mickelson is obviously in pole position to usurp Woods at the summit but there is also a real opportunity for the likes of Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and McIlroy to get to the top of the pile if they can perform well in events such as this tournament, next month's US Open and the Open at St Andrews in July. And of course, looming on the horizon is the Ryder Cup in October - all in all, it promises to be a fascinating summer of golf - and it starts this weekend at Wentworth.
